Toluca: Timelines and Storymap

The following timelines were created with the digital tool Timeline JS from the spreadsheets made with the data collected from different media sites and social media. The storymap was created with the digital tool Storymap JS with a selection of images submitted to the Uncomfortable Footprints website.

1. Timeline created from local and national newspapers

This timeline shows a collection of 59 newspaper articles from local and national Mexican newspapers. The articles were published between February and September 2020. Half of them (30 articles) were published in March, the month with the highest activity of the student-feminist movement, when seven faculties were taken by students.

This visualization also shows how the student movement was interrupted by the lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the lockdown began, only two faculties remained on strike and the media coverage decreased. A single article on the movement was published in April and none was published in May. The attention of the media resumed in June with occasional articles being published until the end of August, when the strikes of the two faculties ends.

2. Timeline of student organizations social media profiles

This timeline was created from social media posts (Facebook and Twitter) of student organizations that participated in the movement. 400 publications from 19 different organizations were documented. These organizations had a strong activity in social media, especially in February and March, when the student movement gained strength and the lockdown had not yet begun in Mexico.

The topics of the posts ranged from calls to collaborate in the student strikes, requests for supplies, activities organized during the strikes, and updates on the movement. However, activity on social media decreases in April and May when the lockdown begins. Organizations went from posting multiple times a day to posting once or twice a week.

For this timeline, it was important to take a screenshot of each post. Since they are on commercial websites, they are in permanent risk of disappearing or being lost among all the information in social media.

This storymap was created with select images submitted to Uncomfortable Footprints. These images come from different places in Toluca, Mexico, where feminist and student protests took place in 2020. You can explore the map of the city or follow the set path. Items are grouped by geographic proximity rather than by chronological order.

The places that appear are Ciudad Universitaria (UAEMex main campus), the historic center of Toluca and the university’s main administrative building. The images are of the student strikes, the graffiti (pintas) with protest slogans, and the 2020 International Women's Day protest.
